I still remember the day like it was yesterday.
Several years ago, I was running a boutique traditional marketing agency and knew it was time to elevate our brand online. We needed a website—a solid, professional one—something that would communicate our value and help us grow. Nothing extravagant. Just 5 to 8 pages. Optimized for search engines. Clean. Clear. Strategic.
What followed should’ve been a simple process.
Instead, it became the moment I realized just how broken and predatory the digital marketing industry could be.
We started shopping around, both locally and online. We had multiple meetings—some face-to-face, some on Zoom. And the quotes started rolling in. I wish I were exaggerating when I say they were all over the place.
One agency wanted $5,000.
Another, $8,500.
One quoted $12,000.
And one bold agency came back with a proposal for $15,000… for a basic website!
But what really pushed me over the edge—and lit the fire that would eventually become Market Boxx—was a particular in-person meeting with a small, polished-looking firm. They were local, well-dressed, and seemed confident in what they offered. After our meeting, they reassured me that they could build exactly what I needed, and they typically charged around $5,000 for similar projects. That felt within range, based on what others were saying.
Then they sent the proposal.
$19,000.
Nineteen. Thousand. Dollars.
For a simple 5–8-page website and basic SEO.
I’ll never forget how I felt in that moment—insulted, honestly. Disrespected. Taken for a fool. That number wasn’t just overpriced; it was criminal. There was no breakdown, no rationale, no $19,000 worth of strategy or results baked into that quote. Just a figure pulled out of thin air.
That’s when I realized something had to change. Not just for me, but for every small business owner out there who’s trying to build something great without getting taken advantage of by flashy agencies or freelancers hiding behind buzzwords and inflated pricing models.
I founded Market Boxx because I was tired of seeing small businesses being exploited by the very people they were hiring to help them grow.
